Elliptical Repair: Fixes for Noise, Wobble, Slipping & Resistance
Elliptical squeaking, wobbling or losing resistance? Owner fixes from Sole, NordicTrack and Life Fitness manuals, and when to call a pro.
Published November 8, 2026
TL;DR: Most elliptical noise and wobble comes from loose hardware, dirty rails and wheels, or an unlevel base, and all three are owner fixes. Sole's E95 manual says "90% of calls to the service department for noise issues can be traced to loose hardware or the rear rails being dirty." Slipping pedals, dead consoles and failed resistance depend heavily on the model, so follow your own manual. A bent pedal arm, cracked frame or damaged drive shaft means stop using the machine and get it inspected.
This guide draws on the Sole E95, NordicTrack NTEL4255.2 and Life Fitness E1 manuals, plus Sole's own blog guides. We did not retrieve ProForm, Schwinn or Horizon documents, so check your own manual before copying a procedure for those brands.
Quick symptom guide
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First check | Go to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squeak, click or thump | Loose hardware, dirty rails or wheels | Tighten bolts, clean the rails | Squeaks, clicks and thumps |
| Rocks or wobbles | Base not level, loose frame bolts | Level and tighten leveling nuts | Wobble and rocking |
| Pedals slip under load | Slipping drive belt | Model-specific belt adjustment | Pedals slipping or hard to pedal |

Squeaks, clicks and thumps
Start with the cheap fixes. The Sole E95 manual names two likely causes of a squeak, thump, click or rough feel: hardware that was not fully tightened during assembly, or dirt on the rear rails and polyurethane wheels.
- Tighten the hardware. The manual says to tighten all assembly bolts as much as possible and notes that you may need a larger wrench than the one provided. Sole's blog adds a caution to follow the manufacturer's guidance so you don't over-tighten.
- Clean the rails and wheels. The E95 manual says to use a lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol, and a thumbnail or non-metallic scraper for stubborn build-up.
- Lubricate lightly. After cleaning, the E95 manual says to apply a thin coat of lubricant to the rails and wipe off the excess. It names no lubricant type. The NordicTrack NTEL4255.2 manual says to use a light coat of silicone-based lubricant on the track if the pedal wheels still squeak after cleaning. A 2026 Sole blog post also recommends silicone-based lubricant and says to avoid WD-40 because it removes existing lubrication. Treat that as marketing guidance and defer to your manual.
- Check under the pedals. The Life Fitness E1 manual says some pedal noise is normal and varies with the user's weight, but to check the hardware beneath the pedal for tightness. It also says a machine getting louder as speed rises is normal for any mechanical device.
Sole's blog says to lubricate every 3 to 6 months depending on use. No manual we read gives an interval, so use that as a rough guide only. For general lubrication technique, our belt lubrication guide covers the same principle: clean first, then a thin coat, never excess.
Wobble and rocking
An elliptical that rocks is usually sitting wrong, not broken.
- Level it. Sole's wobble guide says to place a level on the base and turn the leveling feet until the machine is level, checking from several angles. It notes that adjustment methods differ by brand, so consult the manual. The NordicTrack NTEL4255.2 manual sends owners to its "how to move and level" page for a machine that rocks slightly.
- Lock the leveling nuts. Sole's guide says to tighten the jam nuts against the base after leveling, without over-tightening and damaging the feet. The Life Fitness E1 manual says a creaking from the stabilizers means the nut on the leveler needs to be tight against the stabilizer tube after leveling.
- Check frame bolts. Sole says bolts loosen over time or after the machine is moved, and suggests checking them at least once a month.
- Check the floor. Thick carpet or an uneven surface causes rocking. Sole suggests a hard, level surface, an equipment mat or a plywood base.
The Sole E95 manual also says to confirm the unit is level before calling the service department.
Pedals slipping or hard to pedal
Slipping pedals point to the drive belt, and the fix is model-specific. On the NordicTrack NTEL4255.2, the manual says to remove the two M6 x 16 mm button screws holding the left pedal disk, pivot the disk aside, and turn the M10 flange nut clockwise until the pedals no longer slip during the power stroke. That procedure is for that model only. Sole's blog says a loose belt can be tightened but warns against over-tightening, and says a damaged belt should be replaced with a manufacturer-approved part.
Hard to pedal has more causes. Sole's guide lists:
- Power: weak batteries or a faulty adapter can power the console but not the resistance motor. Replace the batteries or confirm the AC adapter is plugged in and working.
- Resistance set too high: drop to a lower level and build up.
- Dirt, sweat and dry moving parts: wipe the machine after each use and lubricate as your manual recommends.
- Damaged parts: a broken drive belt or tension wire needs replacement or professional repair.
Console dead, shutting off or resistance not responding
Work from the outside in.
- No power: the Life Fitness E1 manual says to confirm the power cord is fully seated at the machine and the wall, to press the Energy Saver button in case the console is in Energy Saver Mode, and to unplug and re-plug each assembly connection while looking for cables pinched during assembly.
- Console turns off when you stop pedaling: on the NordicTrack NTEL4255.2, the manual blames an uncharged battery pack and says to pedal for a few minutes each workout to charge it. If it still shuts off after several minutes of pedaling, it says to call the number on the manual's front cover.
- "OFF" in the level window or no resistance: the Life Fitness E1 manual says to turn the unit off and on again, and if that fails, there is a problem with the resistance system and you should contact customer support.
- Little change at low levels: on the Life Fitness E1, the manual says the resistance curve is designed so you feel more difference at higher levels, so this alone is not a fault.
Resistance motors, boards and wiring are not owner jobs. For a sense of what these repairs cost, see our repair cost guide; the figures there are for treadmills, so treat them as a rough reference.
Pedal arm off track or rubbing
- Pedal disk rubs the side shield (NordicTrack NTEL4255.2): loosen the side shield mounting screws, move the shield slightly until the disk stops rubbing, then retighten.
- Pedal drifts off the track: Sole's 2026 blog says to loosen the main bolt joining the pedal arm to the drive shaft without removing it, re-center the roller on the track, and retighten. It says a bent arm should be replaced, not straightened, and that worn bearings (grinding, wobble, squeaking) mean replacing any bearing that doesn't spin freely.
Monthly upkeep
The manuals describe a short routine:
- Wipe the sweat path after each workout (Sole E95).
- Weekly, inspect and tighten external parts and clean the track and wheels with a cotton cloth and mild cleaner, never spraying cleaner directly on the machine (NordicTrack NTEL4255.2).
- Check major bolts monthly (Sole blog).
The same habits apply to treadmills; see our treadmill maintenance schedule.
When to call a technician
Call a pro, or the manufacturer if you're in warranty, if:
- The noise or wobble returns after tightening, cleaning and leveling
- The pedal arm is bent, the frame is cracked or the drive shaft is damaged. Sole's blog says to stop using the machine and have it inspected
- The console keeps shutting off after charging, or the resistance system fails after a power cycle
- The fix means replacing a motor, board, bearing set or drive belt you're not comfortable replacing
Sole's blog also warns that doing major repairs yourself may void warranty coverage, so contact the manufacturer first if you're covered. To find someone local, see our guide to treadmill repair near you or browse the equipment repair directory. For whether an older machine is worth fixing, the repair or replace guide uses the same logic.
FAQ
Why is my elliptical making noise?
Per Sole's E95 manual, the usual causes are loose assembly hardware or dirt on the rear rails and wheels. Tighten the bolts, clean the rails with a lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol, then add a thin coat of lubricant.
Why does my elliptical wobble?
Usually the base isn't level or the leveling nuts and frame bolts are loose. Level the feet, tighten the jam nuts against the base, and check the floor. If it persists, have the frame inspected.
Why are my elliptical pedals slipping?
The manuals point to a slipping drive belt. The adjustment is model-specific: the NordicTrack NTEL4255.2 uses a flange nut on the pedal disk. Check your own manual instead of copying another model's steps.
How often should I lubricate an elliptical?
Sole's blog says every 3 to 6 months depending on use, but the manuals we read give no interval. Follow your manual, use a thin coat on the rails, and wipe off any excess.
